How Therapy Sessions Can Help You Cope With Stressful Situations

It’s not possible to go through life without experiencing some stress. Too much stress though can make you feel overwhelmed and have debilitating effects on your everyday life. Constantly feeling stressed takes a toll on your mental and physical health.

Stress is your body’s natural reaction to challenging situations. You can experience small amounts of stress, like trying to meet a tight deadline at work. Or you may find yourself under a significant amount of stress due to relationship, health or financial issues. A recent study has shown that 24.52% of women and 15.33% of men in the UK experience stress every day in their lives.

As a stress management intervention, therapy is particularly effective, helping you to cope with stressful situations and enjoy your life to the fullest.

As a registered counsellor and psychotherapist, I provide stress management counselling for work and personal situations. During our sessions, I will help to address your most intimate fears and express your deepest emotions.

Let’s explore what you can expect from my stress management counselling.

What Is Stress Management Counselling?

Stress management therapy uses coping mechanisms and strategies to help prevent and manage stressors and stressful situations. These techniques empower individuals to better handle problems and unforeseen circumstances and to extract positives from them.

Stress management counselling can help people suffering from chronic stress or undergoing unprecedented life changes, including the loss of a loved one, divorce or work redundancy and also to better prepare for future events like marriage or a move to a foreign country.

How My Therapy Sessions Can Help You

I’m a trained relational integrative therapist, and I understand that the success of a therapy session lies in the relationship between the therapist and client. My approach will be tailored to your individual situation and whether you’re seeking therapy for work stress or personal stress.

As a relational integrative practitioner, I am qualified in different therapy techniques, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), humanistic therapy and psychodynamic therapy sessions.

With years of experience helping people like you, when you work with me, you’re guaranteed the comfort and privacy required to share your whole self.

The negative impact of stress can make you constantly feel angry, lead to insomnia and cause troubled interactions with friends, family and colleagues. Stress also has many physical, social and psychological impacts, such as:

  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Rashes and hives
  • Headaches and other physical aches and pains
  • Alcoholism and drug abuse
  • Social withdrawal
  • Anxiety and irritability
  • Panic attacks

Here is how my stress management counselling may help:

  1. I’ll begin by identifying the causes of stress
  2. We’ll work on different stress management and relaxation techniques like deep breathing, and discuss the importance of doing enough physical activity and spending time outdoors.
  3. You’ll learn to practise mindfulness and monitor your biofeedback like heart rate and breathing patterns
  4. I’ll offer a safe space to discuss your fears, expectations and emotions
  5. I’ll support and validate your feelings
  6. We’ll set realistic goals and work towards achieving them

Stress Management Techniques

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

CBT is a goal-oriented talk therapy that will help you identify and change negative thought patterns. During a CBT focused session, I’ll look into your thoughts and how they impact your behaviour, and you’ll start to unlearn negative thinking patterns and adopt healthier thought processes.

CBT can be great for dealing with stress caused by relationship issues, divorces, work-related issues and adjusting to new situations.

Psychodynamic Therapy

This is one of the most popular stress management and relaxation techniques based on Sigmund Freud’s theory that unresolved past conflicts impact present behaviour. During these sessions, I’ll explore the role your subconscious mind plays in your coping with stressful situations.

Psychodynamic therapy pays attention to the impact of the past on our present through a range of techniques. Some of the benefits related to undergoing stress management counselling are better interpersonal relationships, better understanding of self and your emotions, and reduced depression and anxiety.

Exposure Therapy

Another effective stress management intervention involves exposure therapy, where a therapist will expose you to a stressful situation in a controlled manner. This can be incredibly beneficial for those who suffer from chronic stress, or PTSD and encourages you to face your concerns upfront. While this may seem like an overwhelming technique, the process is slow and will move at a pace you feel comfortable with. Over time, you’ll feel more comfortable and confident in these situations and able to cope in a positive manner.

Mindfulness Techniques

Mindfulness is a popular therapy for work stress, and is often combined with CBT. This involves learning mindfulness strategies like breathing exercises, yoga, and other relaxation methods to better deal with stress at work.

If you’re looking for stress relief online practices, search for breathing techniques. These techniques will come in handy and help you get over panic attacks with greater ease.
